The History

Derrick Whiting, Founder & Executive Director of the Flowers Whiting Initiative, embarked on the organization's journey in 2019 with a mission to address the obstacles encountered by returning citizens. Formally incorporated on December 11, 2020, as a Maryland non-profit corporation, the Flowers Whiting Initiative is dedicated to developing and implementing programs focused on workforce development and community outreach. These initiatives are designed to mitigate recidivism rates among returning citizens.

During his incarceration, Derrick engaged in meaningful conversations with fellow inmates, leading to a profound understanding of the root causes of criminal behavior. Recognizing the significant barriers faced by individuals, including limited opportunities and lack of support networks, Derrick reflected on his own privilege of education and employable skills. Motivated by a deep sense of responsibility to assist others facing similar challenges, he established the Flowers Whiting Initiative to provide hope and assistance to those navigating the criminal justice system.

Guided by optimism and a commitment to positive change, Derrick envisions the Flowers Whiting Initiative as a catalyst for transforming neighborhood outcomes and fostering self-sufficiency among returning citizens. Through targeted interventions and comprehensive support, Derrick aims to empower individuals to break the cycle of incarceration and create brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
